A Brown Girl's Tanning Salon Experience

June 07, 2011

Getting right to the point, I've always been curious about tanning salons.  I don't want to be any darker--just would like an even, bronzed skin tone.  That's all! There was a coupon for Planet Beach Tanning Salon where for $20, you were able to use not only their tanning facilities for a week, but also their contempo spa services.  So, I swallowed my nervousness and ventured in last Wednesday.  The lady I met was extremely friendly and helpful.  However, given what I wanted to do, it was going to cost me more like $52 instead of $20. However, for one week, it was definitely worth it.  So, below is my seven day experience at Planet Beach Tanning Salon and Contempo Spa in Brier Creek.

Wednesday (Day 1)

SlimCapsule
First I did the SlimCapsule.  The website states: "the SlimCapsule is the perfect complement to any weight loss regime, while providing an experience that reduces muscle aches and pains, reduces stress and improves circulation and metabolism."

You strip down, apply oil liberally, put on a "sauna suit" that has footies and zips up (I want to purchase one to take to the gym when I sit in the sauna) and lay in the capsule for 30 minutes.  Depending upon your weight, the temperature will vary.  Mine was set at 150 degrees.  So, pretty much, it's like laying in a sauna that's more like a cocoon with a sweat suit on for 30 minutes.  After I got out, I was dripping with sweat.  However, because of the oil they have you put on, my skin so well moisturized and beautiful.  And yes, I did lose a few inches of water weight.

Next I went into the facial room to have the Luminous Facial.  The website states, "Our Luminous Facial is the first complete, naturally advanced FDA approved skincare treatment that uses light therapy with topical skincare products and dietary supplements that work with the body’s own natural processes to: • Reduce fine lines, wrinkles and dark circles • Clear and soothe problematic skin • Create even skin tone and texture • Purge and close clogged pores • Provide immediate lifting and tightening • Stimulate cellular renewal • Lighten age and sun spots."

You also get to to sit in the Cyber-Relax Chair which "soothes aches and pains while improves circulation. Relieve muscle stiffness from your shoulders all the way to your fingertips. Just sit and relax."  This chair is magical.  It's not like the chairs at the nail salons! This thing massages you from the soles of your feet to the top of your neck.

The facial was pretty simple. You just relax in the massage chair and they place the light over your face for 20 minutes.  I used the Lumiere "Repair" line of products.  There's a face wash, product you apply before going under the light, and a post-product.  I didn't notice many changes to my skin after the first application, but it did have a nice glow to it.  The most important thing is that the products didn't break me out.

Friday (Day 2)
Hydro-Derma Fusion
First on the list today was this other cocoon, the Hydro-Derma Fusion. This was more like a steam room, where the SlimCapsule was more like a sauna.  I didn't like this one as much.  I'm more of sweat girl than water droplets covering my skin.  You lay in this one for 20 minutes.  No sweat suit required.  I did like the aeromatherapy though.

After this, I got to relax in the massage chair for 20 minutes until the MysticTan was ready! Oh yeah baby!  The website reads, "Mystic UV-Free: Enjoy beautifully bronzed skin when you step out of a Mystic UV-free session. With the convenience of tanning in seconds and results lasting up to 7 days, you will love the way you look and feel."

Needless to say, I have been looking forward to this! So, you strip down, go inside, stand on the marked spot, press the green button. It sprays the front of you, pauses, and then you turn around and it gets the back of you.

To be honest, I don't know if I'll do this again because it literally terrified me.  If I do, it won't be until my last day!  It's really dark inside the thing and I tried to hold my breath as much as possible because I didn't want to breathe in the chemicals.  Unfortunately, it wasn't pointed out to me and I didn't notice that there were nose guards, so you wouldn't have to hold your breath like I did.  It's hard to do so when you're being sprayed from head to toe and the smell isn't light.  I also think the fact that it was so dark in there and I couldn't breathe is what caused the almost sheer panic and made me want to run out.
Anyhoo, six hours later, my skin still looked the same as it did before I went in.  I may have to speak with them about it. I at least wanted to be able to see a little bit of change. Ugh.

Sunday (Day 3)
Before I forget, after I showered Friday night, I could see a slight difference in my skin tone--slight being the key word and it still wasn't what I was expecting.

Slim Capsule and facial today.  My two fav things! I bumped the temperature in the capsule to 178 degrees, which is the highest it would go, so I was able to burn  a few more calories.

Because it wasn't crowded, I got to ask about the Mystic and why it didn't take as well.  She says that it automatically adjusts to your skin tone.  I explained that I was looking for more of a bronze look than tan.  After researching, I've discovered that there is a HD one that has a bronzer option, so one day, if there's a special, I'll check out the tanning salon that offers it.

Monday (Day 4)
Only the Slim Capsule.  It's Memorial Day and I have things to do! Lol.

Tuesday (Day 5)
After boot camp, I went in and did the Slim Capsule.  It was sooooo relaxing after such a tough workout.

Wednesday (Day 6)
My last day! I went in and did the Slim Capsule and the facial. There was also another black woman in there!

Conclusion
Overall, my experience was positive.  They're getting a RED bed of some sort which is like the red lights they use for the facial.  It's suppose to help even skin tone, improve texture, etc.  Maybe one day I'll make it back in.  The membership is $89/mo. and I just can't see myself forking that over. Most of the staff were friendly and helpful, but as usual, there were some that were more helpful than others.  They also offer teeth whitening on site.  I think if you're looking for a mini-spa experience and don't want to spend all day somewhere, this is the place to go! If you just want a massage and facial some days, or relax in a sauna or steam room, I would check them out.
